System or browser locks up. Introductory screen halts and stays black |
Usually, the system lock up occurs because the latest patches have not been applied
to either Internet Explorer or the Windows Operating System. Follow the steps below
to troubleshoot this issue. If you have any difficulties following
these directions, please contact your local PC administrator for
assistance.
- Update your system with the latest patches for your operating system and browser
- Click the [Start] button on the Windows Task bar
- Select Windows Update located at the top of the task bar
(If the Windows Update option is not available, please
contact your local administrator for assistance).
- After the web page has loaded, select Product Updates to
review the updates for your system
- Download all service packs for Internet Explorer and
Windows. In addition, download any Critical Updates for your
system.
- Make sure your internet browser security settings are set at Medium
- Click on “Tools” on Internet Explorer’s menu bar
- Select “Internet Options” from the menu
- Click on ‘Security’ tab near top of window
- Select “Internet” zone
- Click on “Default” level and move slider to “Medium”
- Click on “OK” to save
- Click on “OK” to exit Internet Options
- Download the latest Virtual Machine build for Internet Explorer:
- Windows 9X/NT
- Windows 2000/XP
- Delete (online and offline) Temporary Internet Files
- Click on “Tools” on Internet Explorer’s menu bar
- Select “Internet Options” from the menu
- Click on “Delete Files” under “Temporary Internet Files”
- Check the “Delete all offline content” box
- Click on “OK” to delete files
- Click on “OK” to exit Internet Options
- Increase the Internet Explorer Temporary Internet Files folder size.
- Click on “Tools” on Internet Explorer’s menu bar
- Select “Internet Options” from the menu
- Click on “Settings” under “Temporary Internet Files'”
- Set “Amount of disk space to use'” is at least 250MB.
- Click on “OK” to save
- Click on “OK” to exit Internet Options
- Check your Internal Infrastructure.There may be issues with your internal
firewall or ISP provider for running Java.
- Verify that the application does not run within your internal network.
- To test the network settings with the same ISP
- Use a Modem and dial-up to the ISP
- Run the application from home with the same ISP as the network
- If the application works, there is a conflict within the internal
infrastructure, either firewall or configuration settings.
- To test the network with a different ISP
- Use a Modem and dial-up with an ISP that is not providing the
internal infrastructure for the network.
- Check from a PC off-site with a different ISP.
- If the application works, there is a conflict with the settings of the ISP.
Contact your ISP provider and verify what settings can be changed to make the application
function properly.

Web Based Training Application needs an updated version of Virtual Machine for Internet Explorer.

Bullets overlap, Text cannot be read or

Windows incorporates a feature called "Large Fonts." Toolbook does not properly recognize
"Large Fonts" when displaying a web-based training course. To Resolve this issue, the
user must enable small fonts. Save all documents before completing the next set of
steps. You will have to restart your computer to finalize the set-up below. Follow
these steps to enable small fonts:
- Click the [Start] button
- Select Settings = > Control Panel
- Double click on “Display”
- Select the “Settings” Tab
- Click the [Advanced] button
- Select the “General” Tab
- Under the display settings, a drop down should be present which displays Font Size.
Select “Small Fonts”
- A window will appear notifying the user that the system must be restarted for the fonts
to take effect. Click [OK]
- Click [Apply]
- A window will appear asking if the user wishes to change the system fonts. Click [Yes]
- Another window will appear notifying the user that the computer may require the
Windows CD to load the new fonts. In addition, the computer will report that setup
can use the existing fonts. Click [Yes].
- Click [Close]
- Click [Yes] to restart your computer.
