¿ Anti-scalding devices, such as thermostatic mixing valves, were installed in all Allegheny Community Home Care owned or leased homes. All anti-scald protective devices will be checked for functionality upon installation and monthly thereafter. The device is an antiscald device for the shower. The water will automatically shut off when it reaches 117 degrees.
¿ Hot water heating appliances will be set at a temperature on or below 120^
¿ Thermometers to test water temperature will be kept on site
B. Specifications for assisting individuals
¿ Any individual who requests or demonstrates the need for assistance during bathing is to be provided such assistance even if that need has not been specifically identified in the individual¿s assessment or plan
¿ Prior to assisting an individual into the shower or tub water, the staff person must test the temperature of the water by placing his or her bare hand into the bathwater or shower stream
¿ An assisting staff person must test the water temperature periodically throughout the individual¿s bath or shower
¿ When testing the water temperature for bathing or showering comfort, the staff person should use his or her bar hand. There should be no glove, covering, or article of clothing that would prevent or impair the staff person to accurately gauge the temperature of the water
C. Monitoring, Testing and Record-keeping
¿ Hot water temperatures must be checked, at minimum, monthly by Supervisor
¿ All water temperature checks will be documented on a water temperature check form by Supervisor
¿ The following steps will be followed for checking water temperature will be followed:
i. The hot water will be turned on in the bathtub or shower (ie. The location where individuals shower or bathe)
ii. The hot water will be allowed to run into a glass container for 15-30 seconds
iii. The thermometer will be placed into the glass while the water continues to run
iv. The temperature on the thermometer will be recorded on the water temperature check form
¿ In the event that the water temperature is less than 100^ or greater than 120^
i. The staff person must notify the manager immediately.
ii. Individuals are to be prevented from using baths or showers that are not operating at a safe water temperature
iii. The Residential Director is responsible for rectifying the homes hot water temperature issue within 24 hours |
