6400.161(a) | Individual # 5 receives Humalog Insulin. This medication is drawn from its container via syringe by the agency nurse. The syringes are placed into a plastic zip lock bag for scheduled administration by staff. | (a) Prescription and nonprescription medications shall be kept in their original containers, except for medications of individuals who self-administer medications and keep the medications in personal daily or weekly dispensing containers. | To assure compliance in this area, we began implementation of diabetic insulin pens in October 2013 whereas insulin is kept in its original container for administration. All residential staff, relief staff, and program supervisors of the four residential sites where individuals use insulin pens were trained on their use on 9/24/13 and 9/26/13.
In addition, as of November 1, 2013 the Diabetes Certification training curriculum offered at PATH, Inc. is inclusive of the use and administration of insulin using diabetic insulin pens.
