If the home serves four or more individuals or if the home has three or more stories including the basement and attic, there shall be at least one smoke detector on each floor interconnected and audible throughout the home to ensure the health and safety of everyone is protected in case of a fire. How was the regulation violated? The attic was not accessible on day of inspection due to recently installed insulation by maintenance personnel. licensors were unable to see if a smoke detector was working. What Caused the Violation? The violation was caused by maintenance installing insulation to the attic, but was not aware of the need for staff to be able to check smoke detector on a continual basis. What can be done right away to fix the violation? Maintenance was made aware of the attic insulation issue and the insulation has been redone so that the attic is accessible and staff is able to check the smoke detector. Since inspection maintenance is aware that all areas of the home need to be accessible in order to check fire detectors and extinguishers during fire drills and safety maintenance checks. If a smoke detector or fire alarm is inoperative, notification for repair shall be made within 24 hours and repairs completed within 48 hours of the time the detector or alarm was found to be inoperative. Why is the regulation important? This regulation is important to ensure all fire alarms are operable to protect the health and safety of individuals in case of a fire. How was the regulation violated? On the day of inspection the interconnected fire alarm system at 1854 Telegraph was not operable. What Caused the Violation? The interconnected system was down and the violation was caused by the manager not properly completing a Safety and Maintenance Check thoroughly. What can be done right away to fix the violation? The protection borough was contacted to schedule an appointment to come and fix the interconnected system. Since the protection borough was not able to make it out to fix the issue on that day, o n7.19.18maintenance personnel and program director purchased individual battery operated smoke detectors and installed throughout the house. Protection borough came out to the house the following day and fixed the interconnected system. What can be done to prevent future violations? Site manager was retrained on how to properly complete a Safety and Maintenance Check to ensure that weekly safety and maintenance checks are being conducted in a more thorough fashion.
